Editing and re-running a course
Editing and re-running a course
In MyStudio (powered by Open edX), you can make changes to courses after they are created and also re-run courses to offer them again in a new term without rebuilding from scratch.
Editing an Existing Course
As an instructor or admin, you can update your course at any time.
- Open the course from your MyStudio dashboard.
- Navigate to the Course Outline.
- Select the Section, Subsection, or Unit you want to edit.
- Use the editor to update:
- Videos (replace URLs, update transcripts).
- Readings/HTML components (revise text, add images, update links).
- Assessments (edit problem text, change scoring, add/remove questions).
- Click Save.
- Publish your changes so learners can see the updated version.
⚠️ Note: If a course is already running, edits to live content may affect learners’ progress. Always preview changes before publishing.
Re-running a Course
Re-running allows you to reuse an existing course as a new offering (new term, new group of learners) while keeping the original intact.
- From the Courses page in MyStudio, find the course you want to re-run.
- Select Re-run Course.
- Enter new identifiers:
- Course Run: A unique value for the new offering (e.g.,
2024_T1
). - (Optionally update) Course Number or Title if needed.
- The system creates a new course shell that is an exact copy of the original.
- Update course dates, content, or assessments as needed.
- Publish the new course for learners to enroll.
What Gets Copied in a Re-run?
When you re-run a course:
- Course outline, videos, assessments, and settings are copied.
- Learner data and enrollment are not copied.
- Certificates, discussion posts, and analytics remain with the original run.
Best Practices
- Use Re-run Course for new terms or batches instead of editing the existing live course.
- Update start and end dates before opening enrollment.
- Double-check grading policies and due dates so they match the new schedule.
- Consider refreshing content (e.g., updated case studies, new readings) to keep courses current.
In Summary
- Editing: Make changes directly in the Course Outline and republish content.
- Re-running: Duplicate a course for a new term while keeping past runs intact.
- Both workflows give you flexibility to update or reuse content without rebuilding everything.
