How to create a new course (MyStudio)

In MyStudio, you can start creating a course from multiple entry points.

Whether you use the Create button, the Templates page, or the My Courses page, the process will guide you through selecting a template or building a course from scratch.

1. Create Button (Left-Side Menu)

  • On the MyStudio dashboard, look for the red Create button in the left-hand menu.
  • Clicking this opens the Create modal, where you can:
  • Start from scratch and build a new course.
  • Use a template to speed up course creation.
  • Inside the modal, you can search templates, browse template categories, and apply filters to narrow down results.

2. Templates Page

  • Navigate to the Templates section from the left-hand menu.
  • Here you can view all available course templates.
  • You can select:
  • Pre-built templates (ideal for standard course structures).
  • Create a Course From Scratch.
  • Use the search bar and filters to find the template that fits your subject.

3. My Courses Page

  • From the left-hand menu, select Courses > My Courses.
  • On this page, click the option to + New Course.
  • You will be given two choices:
  • From Scratch → You will be taken directly to the Course Outline page after filling the course setup form.
  • From Template → You will be redirected to the Templates page, where you can choose a template.

Course Setup Form

After selecting From Scratch or a Template, you will see the Create a New Course form.

Here’s what each field means:

  • Course Name:

The display name of your course (e.g., Introduction to Computer Science).

> Note: The display name can be updated later in Advanced Settings, but the original entry will be part of the course metadata.

  • Organization:

The name of your institution or publisher (e.g., EBC-Publishing).

> Note: The organization name is part of the course URL and cannot be changed later.

  • Course Number:

A unique identifier for your course (e.g., CS101).

> Note: This is also part of the URL, cannot contain spaces or special characters, and cannot be changed later.

  • Course Run:

Indicates the session or term (e.g., 2024_T1).

> Note: This too becomes part of the URL and cannot be changed later.

Once all fields are filled in, click Create to proceed.

After Course Creation

Once the course is created:

  1. You will be taken to the Course Outline page.
  2. From here, you can begin adding sections, units, and content.
  3. Continue building your course by uploading materials, configuring grading, and previewing content.

Tips

  • Choose clear course numbers and runs (e.g., Law101, 2024_T1) for easier tracking later.
  • Remember that Organization, Course Number, and Course Run form part of the course URL — choose carefully as these cannot be changed.
  • Use templates when you want a pre-structured layout, especially for recurring course formats.

In Summary

You can create a course in MyStudio by:

  1. Clicking the red Create button.
  2. Browsing the Templates page.
  3. Using My Courses > + New Course.

All three lead to the course setup form, where you define the Course Name, Organization, Course Number, and Course Run before building your outline.
