Managing the course outline and modules

In MyStudio the Course Outline is where you structure and organize your course.

It allows you to create Sections, Subsections, and Units (sometimes called modules) that hold your videos, readings, and assessments.

Understanding the Structure

  • Section: The top-level container (often used for weeks or topics).
  • Subsection: A smaller grouping within a Section (e.g., a lesson or module).
  • Unit: The lowest level of organization where actual learning components live (e.g., a video, a reading, or a quiz).

This three-level hierarchy helps you design courses that are clear and easy for learners to follow.

Creating and Editing the Course Outline

  1. From the MyStudio dashboard, open your course and go to the Course Outline tab.
  2. Use the + Section, + Subsection, or + Unit buttons to add new items.
  3. To rename a Section, Subsection, or Unit:
  • Click the edit icon next to its title.
  • Enter the new name and save.
  1. To reorder modules, drag and drop them into the desired sequence.

Adding Content to Units

  • Inside each Unit, you can add different components:
  • Video (lectures, tutorials, recordings).
  • Text/HTML (instructions, readings, explanations).
  • Problem/Quiz (multiple choice, checkbox, numeric, dropdown, etc.).
  • Use the Add New Component button to insert content into a Unit.

Publishing Content

  • Newly added or edited content appears in Draft mode.
  • Learners will not see draft content until it is published.
  • To publish:
  • Click Publish at the Unit, Subsection, or Section level.
  • Publishing at a higher level publishes everything beneath it.

Reorganising and Maintaining the Outline

  • You can move Units or Subsections between Sections by dragging them.
  • To hide content, set release dates in the Subsection’s settings so learners see it only after a certain time.
  • Use the Release Date and Due Date fields to control availability and deadlines.

Best Practices

  • Use Sections to represent weeks or major topics.
  • Keep Subsections focused—1–2 per Section is typical.
  • Group related activities inside Units (e.g., a reading + video + quiz).
  • Preview content before publishing to ensure learners see what you intend.

In Summary

The Course Outline is the backbone of your course in MyStudio.

It allows you to:

  • Organise content into Sections, Subsections, and Units.
  • Add videos, readings, and assessments inside Units.
  • Control release dates, visibility, and publishing status.

A well-structured outline ensures a clear and effective learning experience for your students.
